YMSA - Yoga Meditation Studios Australia - Complete Yoga Breath Part 1

Complete Yoga Breathing (CYB) Part 1

The humble Complete Yoga Breath (CYB), this is the most important breath that you will learn in a yoga class or deep peace relaxation / meditation session.  It is actually the correct way of breathing and once this is established all other breathing techniques can be practiced to their fullest potential.

CBY is important for many reasons.  Initially it is responsible for making the breath longer, deeper and more cleansing for your respiratory system.

When I am teaching a class I like to break this breath down into three parts; firstly we breathe into the belly region, then the ribcage and lastly the upper chest.  Air is guided to these three places and once the student knows and feels what it is like to breathe into and fill all these areas, we are then able to combine these 3 breaths together into one long deep complete yoga breath. Once students develop awareness of where to both direct the breath and how to properly expel the exhale, they are able to breathe in this way throughout the yoga asana class.

If you don’t properly utilise the lungs, what’s happens is that the respiratory system is only working at half or a third of its capacity. It is important to fully generate fresh, new oxygen and help it flow around the body with ease.  When you breathe into the belly area you will find that the abdomen swells with the inward breath massaging the internal organs of the digestive system stimulating digestion. At the end of the exhale all of the cells within the body flatten out expelling toxic gases.

Keep an eye out for the next installment of CYB coming up soon.

If you would like to practice complete yoga breathing in a class environment go here to check out our timetable yoga palm beach or leave us a comment below and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Hatha Yoga for health

Hi Yoga Meditation fans

I think this photo says it all, as that old saying goes "A picture can speak a thousand words"

Hatha yoga is one of the most effective ways to help you look and feel energised and may add years to your life with better health, strength and flexibility.

It is suitable for all ages and all health conditions and almost everyone will get some positive benefits from doing yoga on a regular basis.

The consistent practice of yoga asanas along with meditation is one of the most effective methods of reducing stress, and anything that will help reduce the effects that stress can have on your body and mind will help you feel better, more rejuvenated.

There are a few different styles of yoga, you can choose the one that suits your needs the most. Even the simplest of yoga exercises will help you and the more advanced asanas will improve and help maintain all of your bodily systems.

Yoga helps to improve your blood circulation which keeps your skin looking healthier. Some inverted asanas will increase the blood flow to the scalp and this can assist with the reduction of hair loss, better brain function and healthier eyes.

Increased flexibility will help to reduce muscular and joint pain and a reduction in pain is always helpful for a persons overall mental well being and general health.

Yoga supports the digestive system and this will help you get maximum benefit from the food that you eat, this will improve your health which may be reflected in better elimination of toxins.

Check our timetable. See you in class.

Yoga health & happiness

Benefits of Yoga Poses:

1. Energy: Yoga exercises, breath control training (pranayama) and use of yoga body locks (bandhas) all work to activate and balance your energy pathways, giving you the vitality and power you need to maximize your potential.

2. Strength: By strength here we don’t just mean physical muscular strength, although that will benefit greatly as well due to the steady holding of yoga poses and the exercises that yoga incorporates, but also the strength of your internal physiological systems.  Strength of your immune system, nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system, reproductive system, etc.

3. Healing: The power of Yoga to heal ailments and cure diseases is becoming more and more an integral part of mainstream medical practice and treatment methods.  This ability of Yoga to heal also promotes longevity.

4. Flexibility:  Yoga postures (asanas) are perhaps the best type of exercises you can do to improve flexibility.  Flexibility is essential for avoiding injuries as well as for the health of the joints, tendons and muscles.

5. Peace: Yoga meditations and practice promotes a greater awareness and appreciation of our spiritual essence, yoga meditations calm the mind and enables the peace deep within to unfold and flourish.

6. Joy: With the maturing of ones Yoga practice, the beauty, richness and depth of wisdom and knowledge of self becomes more apparent and the uncovering of ones heartfelt connection with Yogesvara the Supreme awakens bringing deep seated joy and satisfaction.

7. Compassion: Yoga values and philosophy, along with the practice of yoga meditations, helps to develop thoughtfulness, generosity and compassion.

8. Brain Enhancement: Yoga breathing exercises and yoga meditations develop parts of the brain that are normally dormant. In addition as the brain develops so does your intelligence and clarity of thoughts.

9. Concentration: The requirement of many Yoga meditations to keep the mind focused on mantras (sound vibrations), helps to dramatically increase your power of concentration and focused attention.

10. Awareness: Yoga can simply be called the Science of Awareness.  To increase awareness of the workings and limitations of the body. To become aware that 'I' am seperate from mind and body. I am the observer. I am temporarily inhabiting this earth body, but I am not it.

Come to a yoga class. Check our timetable for a time that suits you.

Kirtan Kooly - Coolangatta

Meditation

In a topsy turvy, often chaotic world, meditation can help you to find a place of stillness, serenity and peace within. Through meditation we learn to manage life’s challenges in a practical way. During kirtan meditation you will find shelter from daily stress and have the opportunity to focus on your inner sanctuary. Meditation will have you feeling positive, energised and able to cope with life's trials rationally with thoughtfulness and understanding.

Kirtan meditation clears the heart and mind of unwanted things or "anarthas" a sanskrit word, which when translated into english is similar to the words envy, anger, or hatred. Meditation helps us to become free from bad qualities and at the same time increases good qualities like paitence, tolerance, compassion, forgiveness and love. A person may also improve their ability to gradually be able to tap into their inner wisdom, develop more understanding and insights into the real meaning and purpose of life.

Meditation is very powerful, more so when done with a group. Group meditation is called Kirtan. Kirtan is group singing and chanting of timeless sacred mantras. Listen, dance, sing, smile, have fun - this is Kirtan.

Kirtan is meditation at it's most powerful. Feel the burden of stress and anxiety lift off your shoulders. Make friendship with like minded people. Make a contribution to the welfare of the whole planet and all living beings by radiating these powerful sound vibrations throughout the atmosphere.

If you are into kirtan's or even if you have never been to one before, we invite you to come experience Kirtan Kooly featuring Prahlad D and friends every Saturday @ 6pm at our new venue in Coolangatta.
This is a FREE event

YMSA - Yoga Meditation Studio Palm Beach - Viloma Breathing

Viloma Breathing

Last week we blogged about Nadi Shodan breathing and all the great benefits we can experience through the practice of Nadi Shodan pranayama.

Another breathing technique that I love to use when I ‘just’ need a break is Viloma breathing.

Again, just like with all other pranayamas, each breathing technique is priceless in that it makes you become more aware of your breath and particularly how you are breathing. Here in this practice we have the opportunity to direct the breath, control the mechanical process of breathing to increase the health benefits of our natural breathing our inhale and exhale.

The practice of Viloma breathing requires that you to bring the breath down to the bottom of the lungs and then bring the breath up to the middle of the lungs. So, we are working the breath in stages.  It is also known as top up or staggered breath.

Our lives are so stressful, we find that during the day tension and stress builds up in the body. When this happens we tend to breathe very shallowly into the upper part of the lungs.  Stress starts in the mind and the body takes the blows. Tension accumulates in the most vulnerable areas of the body, or where we have a tendency to hold tension and stress. Usually the neck, shoulders and head suffer.  The end result of shallow breathing is that the lungs take only a third of the breath it needs into the upper chest while the lower and middle parts are ignored.  Stagnant air becomes trapped in the lower areas of our lungs and has no way of moving out of the body. The only way we can get rid of this toxic air is through the practice of pranayama. We need fresh prana to circulate through the lungs in order to flush out all of the toxic, stale air.  This is very important because if stale air stays in the lungs this is not healthy for the body. The lungs transport air into the blood stream to revitalize and feed all of our cells, keeping the body healthy. The more fresh chi we can send to the blood stream the better off and healthier we will be.  If an ample supply of fresh oxygen prana or chi is not available to enter the blood stream we may become lethargic, tired and prone to sickness.

Viloma breathing will gently remove tension out of the entire body, you will become aware of the release in the torso especially when you inhale and bring the breath in and down to the ribcage, abdominal region.  The shoulders will soften; releasing tension and the lungs will be stretched and exercised increasing lung capacity and also increasing strength to the lung muscle tissue.   Your parasympathetic nervous system will switch on and revitalise, re-energise and heal the body. The longer you are able to practice this relaxation technique the more benefits the body will gain.

I love to practice Viloma breathing before I go to bed at night. It is very effective due to the rapid way this practice relaxes the body. I calm my body, slow my mind down and reduce my heart rate while listening to yoga mantras that rest my soul and helps me to feel peaceful.

I can’t think of a better way to transport the body/mind/spirit into a soothing, tranquil state before nodding off.

If you would like any more information on this topic (pranayama breathing) or yoga and meditation you are welcome to contact us. Leave a comment along with your details and we will get back to you as soon as wel can. Have a great day.
