Yoga Nidra (Nid-Ra) is a method of
relaxation to help quieten your mind and release physical tension, bringing calmness and clarity to your whole being.
Nidra (Sanskrit) means ‘deep sleep’, not dreaming. It is a state of conscious deep sleep.
This ancient yoga tradition is described as a form of meditation which is usually practiced whilst lying down. Those of you who have attended a yoga class may be familiar with yoga nidra which is usually practiced at the end of the class.
It’s not a necessity to attend a yoga
class to enjoy the benefits of yoga nidra. You can easily practice in the comfort
of your own home.
Yoga Meditation Studios Kingscliff has made available a yoga nidra CD, enhanced with beautiful music, and finishes with a very peaceful yoga chant.
Very calming and tranquil.
To order your yoga nidra CD, please phone (02) 66742556. $10 or if posted $15
Some simple
guidelines:
Before commencing you will need to
find a quiet, warm place, where you won’t be disturbed for about 30
minutes.
- The best way to practice yoga nidra is by lying on your back with your arms out by your sides and the palms facing up.
- Your feet should be hip width apart with the toes falling outwards.
- Your eyes are to remain closed throughout the session; an eye pillow is helpful. To lessen any external distractions.
- It’s also important whilst lying down to make sure your body is in a symmetrical position.
- You can check this by slightly lifting your head and looking down past your navel to your feet.
- This position helps balance the flow of prana (chi) or life-force throughout your body.
Yoga nidra helps one gain an inner
peace and quieting of the mind. It’s a very relaxed state and
beneficial for your whole being. Ideally it is recommended to make this a daily activity which only takes 20-30 minutes.
If you feel that you haven’t got the
time then please consider that practitioners claim a 20-30 minute yoga nidra session has
the same rejuvenating effect as several hours of sleep!
