YMSA - Yoga Meditation Studios Palm Beach - Nadi Shodan Pranayama

Nadi Shodan Pranayama

There are a number of Pranayama breathing techniques that are very beneficial for our body.  One that I have been using to help keep me grounded is the Nadi Shodan Pranayama breath.  It is also called Alternate nostril breathing. This is a very nice pranayama which can be used to clear the energy centres in the body. This practice also helps move the flow of energy/chi/prana through the meridians more effectively.

Nadi Shodan breathing helps balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain while
alternately exercising the left and right lungs. This simple practice clears the blockages in both sides of the airways, you may notice this instantly when transitioning from pranayama breathing to normal breathing.

Nadi Shodan breathing has other benefits also, this practice helps to wake us up, we become more alert and at the same time our body is able to remain calm and relaxed. This has obvious advantages especially because these days our lives are so kaotic and stressful, we find that we often feel run down and tired. It's helpful to know quick rejuvenating and balancing techniques to help us get through the day and our daily chores.

Nadi Shodan is a quick and simple practice. It revitalises, helps us concentrate and think more clearly. We feel refreshed, more centred and better equipped to deal with any problems we may encounter.

It is very easy to do, so everyone should be able to find 5 minutes during the day to practice it and experience the benefits for themselves.

If you would like to learn how to practice Nadi Shodan pranayama you are welcome to contact us at YMSA Yoga Meditation Studio Palm Beach. Leave us a comment below, along with your details. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

You will need a 22cm round spring form tin

Nutty Base

Use this combination of Nuts, or what ever you have handy

    1 cup macadamia nuts
    1/2 cup walnuts
    1/4 cup shredded coconut
    Pinch of Himalayan salt
    1/2 - 3/4 cup pitted dates

Ingredients for Filling

4 cups raw cashews (soaked for 2-4 hours and then drained)
    3/4 cup lemon juice
3/4 to 1 cup coconut nectar
    3/4 cup coconut oil
    1 fresh vanilla bean, scraped

Colourful Healthy Topping

    2 cups frozen strawberries
    1/2 - 3/4 cup pitted dates
1 cup thinly sliced fresh strawberries and 1 cup whole strawberries, to serve

    How To:

    Step 1

Lightly cover the round spring form tin with coconut oil. Line the base and sides with baking paper. This step helps when it comes time to remove the finished cheesecake from the tin. Next place the top 4 crust ingredients in a food processor, process into chunky crumbs. Next add the dates and pulse until all ingredients are well combined BUT don't overprocess. Press mix into the base of the spring form tin and place in the freezer while you prepare the rest of the cheesecake

Step 2

Blend the ingredients for the filling at high speed until smooth. Pour onto the base and return to the freezer. Note: Make sure the base filling has set enough before pouring the strawberry mixture on top

Step 3

In a clean blender, blend the frozen strawberries and dates on high until smooth. Pour this mix on top of the cheesecake layer and return to the freezer for 4 - 5 hours or overnight

Step 4

When you are ready to serve, let the cheesecake sit first at room temperature for 10-15 minutes. Release the cheesecake from the spring form tin and carefully remove the baking paper. Place the cheesecake onto a decorative serving platter. Arrange the thinly sliced and whole strawberries on top

What a great treat to share with family and friends.

YMSA - Yoga Meditation Studios Australia - Complete Yoga Breath Part 2

Complete Yoga Breathing (CYB) Part 2

Fully utilising the lungs helps pump lymph fluid around the body cleansing millions of cells, getting rid of toxins and waste products.  The natural undulation of the body gently moves the spine and maintains the movement of cerebral fluid up and down the spinal column lubricating and transporting valuable new nutrients and hormones to all the vertebrae, nervous system and most importantly the brain.

When you expand the ribcage the upper chest will lift upwards with new air, the lungs then contract pushing out old stagnant air, toxins and wastes. The lungs are then ready to welcome new prana into the body on the next inhale.

The mind is focused on breathing which has a calming effect on the heartbeat, causing the heart to slow down, switching on the parasympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system revitalises, restores and heals the body.  Blood pressure drops and a greater exchange of oxygen takes place during the practice of this pranayama.

It is natural for the body and mind to feel lighter after practising complete yoga breathing (CYB) because it makes the body feel so good.  Who would have thought that just by practicing this simple easy to do pranayama and knowing how to use your breath efficiently, you are able to easily maintain the health of your body.

If you would like to learn how to practice this wonderful pranayama in a class environment, you are very welcome to contact us. Leave us a comment along with your details and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Go here for a class timetable yoga palm beach

See you in class.

YMSA - Yoga Meditation Studios Australia - Complete Yoga Breath Part 1

Complete Yoga Breathing (CYB) Part 1

The humble Complete Yoga Breath (CYB), this is the most important breath that you will learn in a yoga class or deep peace relaxation / meditation session.  It is actually the correct way of breathing and once this is established all other breathing techniques can be practiced to their fullest potential.

CBY is important for many reasons.  Initially it is responsible for making the breath longer, deeper and more cleansing for your respiratory system.

When I am teaching a class I like to break this breath down into three parts; firstly we breathe into the belly region, then the ribcage and lastly the upper chest.  Air is guided to these three places and once the student knows and feels what it is like to breathe into and fill all these areas, we are then able to combine these 3 breaths together into one long deep complete yoga breath. Once students develop awareness of where to both direct the breath and how to properly expel the exhale, they are able to breathe in this way throughout the yoga asana class.

If you don’t properly utilise the lungs, what’s happens is that the respiratory system is only working at half or a third of its capacity. It is important to fully generate fresh, new oxygen and help it flow around the body with ease.  When you breathe into the belly area you will find that the abdomen swells with the inward breath massaging the internal organs of the digestive system stimulating digestion. At the end of the exhale all of the cells within the body flatten out expelling toxic gases.

Keep an eye out for the next installment of CYB coming up soon.

YMSA Yoga Meditation Studio Palm Beach - Bumble Bee Breath

Brahmari Pranayama
(Often taught in a Yoga Meditation class)

If someone who wasn’t familiar with Yoga breathing practices walked into a roomful of people humming like a swarm of bees - they might start to worry or question the state of mind of people in the room.  I have to admit, I’ve had a little chuckle myself after glancing around the room during the practice of Bumble Bee breathing - the scene immediately brings a smile to my face. I especially love the vibrational energy it brings.  It sounds like a group of people omming and has the same relaxing effect.  It definitely lifts the mood in the room.

Humming Bee breath or Brahmari breath is a simple pranayama technique. The outward breath is directed to a specific area of the body, this breath vibrates internal and external areas of the body releasing tension. A person will also notice a reduction in stress, anxiety and an increase in the feeling of peacefulness and serenity.

What’s actually happening in the body is that the vibration stimulates the cells beneath the skin helping the blood flow rapidly into dry dehydrated muscles and tendons bringing fresh nutrients. This is helpful for regenerating and restoring organs for good health.

When told about the health and meditation benefits of Brahmari breathing, everyone becomes very enthusiastic and wants to try it.  This technique involves vibrating the lips while expelling air and thinking “Om” at the same time.  Sounds difficult when reading about it but on a practical level it is ever so simple.

The areas that receive the most benefit from the practice of Brahmari breathing are the upper chest, throat and nasal passages. As the sound vibrates and moves through the body,  healing begins to take place in those areas.

I have personally found humming Bee breath to be very effective in soothing and minimising the outbreak of cold sores around my mouth. When I feel one coming on, that familiar, annoying, tingling feeling around my lips - I practise Brahmari breathing.

We all experience built-up tension in the body bought on by the stressful situations we face every day. Stress has an adverse effect on the immune system, however we can counteract this by practising Brahmari breathing. A person can calm their mind; ease anxiety, tension and frustration. This is a very effective practice which will help to quickly restore balance to your mind and body.

A headache can be caused by lack of energy and blood flow through the shoulders and neck area. The gentle vibration produced by Brahmari breathing can help activate the body’s natural healing energy causing it to move and improve the flow of blood. The blood system transports nutrients and lubricants into tight areas of the body loosening built up tension.

This pranayama is another  valuable tool that we can add to our self help toolbox. You might find this practice a little unusual at first because of the “omming” sound the practice produces. But you will get used to it and even begin to really like the sound and find it to be soothing and calming. Like most breathing techniques because they calm the mind, the heart rate will slow down and this in turn lowers blood pressure.

You can practice Brahmari breathing at the end of a long day when you need a little TLC.
Just find a  comfortable area for your practice and take a few minutes to unwind. Be kind to yourself, breathe slowly and deeply removing tension or stress in the upper areas of the body that need a little rejuvenation and revitalisation.

If you want to try this before going to bed, this pranayama breath has been known to aid insomnia helping you to drift off and experience a deep relaxing nights rest.

If you would like to learn how to practice this wonderful pranayama you are welcome to contact us. Leave us a comment along with your details and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

YMSA - Mantra Meditation Studio Sunshine Coast - Classes

We offer our meditation program once a week. There are a small amount of people coming so far, but it is really personal which people seem to appreciate. The details of our program are below.

Deep peace meditation-

This session includes mantra deep breathing, Kirtan (mantra chanting) and a mini guided relaxation session. This is a very mellow and relaxing evening.

Mantra Meditation-

Mantra meditation is a process of hearing and chanting sacred Mantras. ‘Man’ Means the mind and ‘tra’ means to transport the mind away from the material realm and place it on the spiritual realm.

Singing the mantras in a group-

This is called ‘Kirtan.’ This practice is very enjoyable and has nothing to do with having a
good singing voice, so don’t feel shy. It is done in a call-response style where you listen to the mantra being chanted by us and as a group everyone chants together in response to the mantra you heard. We usually play musical instruments also to accompany the tunes we sing.

Location-

We are located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Our programs are held in the Maroochydore area. Every Wednesday night 7.00pm – 8.30pm. No bookings required. Free Refreshments served.

 About us-

Each of us started our spiritual journeys in different parts of the world and at different times until one day we crossed paths. We have been practicing mantra meditation for many years on a daily basis and have experienced the wonderful benefits from it, which has motivated us to share it with others.
